ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

The Perinatal Mental Health (PMH) Programs support new parents through their journey which can include challenges with depression, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, guilt, isolation, and the stigma associated with struggling with your mental health.
At Families Matter, we have a program specifically designed to address disparities and unmet needs within the Black communities of Alberta. Our Peer Supporters from the Black community are trained and better able to support Black parents within a cultural context.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Black pre or post-natal parents of children, ages 0-24 months, living in Alberta.
No official diagnosis is needed, and you can be receiving supports from other professionals at the same time.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

You will receive weekly 1-hour phone calls with a trained Black Peer Supporter with lived experience. Your Peer Supporter is available to discuss:
  • Worries or new emotions you may have about raising your baby
  • Suggesting new ways of coping with being a parent
  • Stigma or shame you may experience within your culture or family
  • Culturally appropriate resources in your area that can support you

Call, text, or email to complete an intake session or to set up an appointment for one.

All our supports are available year-round. It is never too late, or too early to ask for help. Once the intake is complete, triage occurs every week where the services that are best suited to your needs will be assessed and you will be contacted when the program is available.
